Vegan dish from Södermalm, Stockholm

My 5 favorite vegetarian & vegan places in Stockholm

By: Yulia Toropova

In terms of the vegetarian world, Stockholm has plenty of things to offer. Whether you are on a strict plant-based diet or not, the amount of local offerings will feel like a real paradise to you 😉

Swedes are truly obsessed with a healthy way of living and care about the environment, so you can be certain that almost every cafe or restaurant will have both vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options on the menu. In this article, however, I would like to have a closer look at some great vegetarian spots around the city, which are extremely popular among the locals and also pocket-friendly for us students (YASS!).

Location: Södermalm

Tags: Lunch, Dinner, Buffet, Grill, Terrace

This one  is by far my favourite vegan spot in the city. With a wonderful location  overlooking lake Mälaren, Herman’s serves an impressive plant-based buffet, consisting of both cold and hot dishes, salads and soups (Psst! They also do grill during the weekends). Moreover, the spacious outside terrace makes it a great summer spot much admired by both locals and tourists. Don’t forget to show your student card in order to get a discount!

Location: Skanstull

Tags: Lunch, Dinner, Cosy, Hipster

Despite being relatively new, this place quickly became a hit among locals. Located in Södermalm, Falloumi is a little cosy place specializing in plant-based bowls and pita pockets filled with delicious middle eastern flavors: hummus, halloumi, falafel, tahini, and many others. It gets really crowded around evening, so try to get your spot at lunch! (Tip: when doubting a drink, try their homemade lemonade, it’s simply delicious!)

Location: Hammarby Sjöstad

Fröjdas is a true gem hidden in one of Stockholm’s newer residential areas. It is a family-run upscale restaurant with a very high standards set; all food is cooked with love and presented in a Michelin-star way, the decor makes you feel like you dine in the middle of a magic forest, and the personnel is just lovely and extremely attentive. The only negative can be the price point which might feel a little too much for a student, but here is the solution: they also happened to serve brunch on Saturdays 11-15 pm with a fixed price. Come for any special occasion to celebrate, and enjoy the magical experience (Psst! They are very friendly towards animals, so you might be able to meet an adorable french bulldog owned by the family)

4: Mahalo

Location: Södermalm, Sibirien

Tags: Breakfast, Lunch, Menu, Hipster, Healthy

With two locations across the city, Mahalo is your typical hipster place with a variety of healthy food options, such as different vegan bowls, salads and smoothies. Should you be rushing for your group work or presentation, I’d highly recommend getting something here for lunch to take with you (Tip: use Karma app to get the same menu items half price when shopping after 1-2pm)

Location: Hornstull

This little cafe just recently went under rebranding, and now offering plant-based and fully gluten-free food & beverages options. But what makes it on this list is the absolutely delicious raw cakes made in the famous Unbakery (my favourite is the “snickers”). Come and try them, along with some delicious coffee or tea to start your day right.

As you can see, there are plenty of options to choose from depending on the occasion, and I am delighted to tell you that there is so much more to try! It is simply impossible to mention all of the local offerings in one blog, but you should not be hesitant and give them a try. Feel free to share your experience as a vegan or vegetarian in your country, and let us know what your favorite cafes and restaurants are 🙂

My suggestion is to try it out for yourselves with your international classmates: It’s an amazing way to discover Stockholm, and even if you’re not vegan, you will be surprised at how much you will actually enjoy the food!
