4 Ways of Getting to Stockholm Arlanda Airport (And Back)

By: Stefanie Kleemeyer

The winter break is coming closer, only a couple more weeks to go and many of us will be leaving Stockholm and return to their home country for a short vacation at home. Mingling with old friends, sharing Swedish candy and just enjoying the time, while missing your second home – Stockholm – a bit.

I know that flying is the worst, but sometimes there are no other options. In order to get home, many of us need to go to the airport.

From the city to the airport

Arriving in Stockholm, I was picked up by a shuttle bus that was organized by KTH. Now I have to find my own way from the city to the airport. So what is the easiest, maybe fastest, or most relaxed way to get there?*

*As a reference all options shown below are from T-Centralen to Arlanda.

I know that flying is the worst, but sometimes there are no other options. In order to get home, many of us need to go to the airport.

1. Flygbussarna

The Flygbussarna (air shuttle) is a bus coach that is going to Arlanda from the City terminal.
Duration: Approx. 35 to 45 min from the City Terminal to Arlanda
Schedule: These busses are departing every 10 to 15 min
Fare: A single ride costs you 129 SEK

2. Flixbus

Flixbus are the green busses, that are taking you anywhere. You might have seen them from time to time.
Duration: Approx. 35 to 45 min from the City terminal to Arlanda
Schedule: Busses are departing every 15 to 30 min. You might need to check the schedule online.
Fare: A single ride is around 79 SEK, some might be more expensive.

3. Arlanda Express

The Arlanda Express is a special train that is going from Stockholm to Arlanda.
Duration: Approx. 18 min
Schedule: The train is departing every 15 min from T-Centralen
Fare: Children/Youth (8-25 years) pay 160 SEK for a single ride
Adults from 26 years pay 340 SEK for a single ride

4. SL Commuter trains

SL’s Commuter trains are probably the cheapest option, as most students have bought a SL-card anyways. From T-Centralen you take the pendeltåg to Märsta. From Märsta you have to take a bus 583 that takes you to the airport.
Duration: Approx. 60 min
Schedule: The 41 and 42X are departing approx. every 15 min from T-Centralen
Fare: 26 SEK for a discounted ticket and 42 SEK for a regular ticket. If you have a travel card  that is valid for a couple of days/weeks/months no extra fee is added.

Final thoughts

The quickest option is the Arlanda Express, it is the most expensive one though. My personal favorites are the Flixbus and the SL Commuter trains, both are super cheap and take a reasonable time of getting you to the airport.

Oh, one more thing that might be good to know. As you may have guessed, it is easier to buy your ticket in advance, and luckily there is wifi in almost any bigger public building nowadays. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
